One of the topics that interest me is personal finance and I consider Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad to be a book that's great both for shifting your paradigm regarding money as well as for keeping you motivated as you strive for financial freedom. I had heard about the Cashflow 101 board game but I did not really pay much attention because the board game was very expensive (Kiyosaki is selling Cashflow 101 for $195). There was a local group that regularly met to play the game but even that was expensive (more than P1000 per game). So when Metrodeal featured Cashflow, I quickly bought two vouchers.

We met with the other folks at Spicy Fingers in Greenbelt 2. In our table, there were 2 facilitators and 5 of us newbie players. The game's mechanics was explained and we were each given two sheets of paper -- Income Statement/Balance Sheet and Small Deals Buying Sheet. Financial independence is about getting out of the rat race so each player was represented by a tiny plastic rat.

We chose our occupation and as expected, we money-loving peeps chose the fancy jobs: business manager, doctor, pilot, etc. No one chose to be a janitor (which we later found out was not as disadvantaged as we thought). Each turn, we would roll two dice and move our plastic rat. Where the rat landed would determine our fate -- lose a turn, draw a small or big deal, have a kid -- and the state of our finances. To get out of the rat race, one's passive income must exceed his expenses.
The game was very engaging even though it was long. We actually felt "bitin", we wanted to play more! The game also touched upon investing in stocks and real estate without being intimidating since the approach was hands-on rather than classroom-type. By the end of the workshop, everyone was beaming and inspired.

ReplyDeleteI think there's a free online version (perhaps unofficial) but I haven't tried it so I don't know if it's as good as the board game or if it's really free.
DeleteI used to play cash flow back in Qatar.I have a group where in we meet once a week and we talk about business,investments and money matters and of course cash flow is a part of out topic. It helps us a lot on mone savings and investment.

ReplyDeleteyup it was a good book. ideal for those who need a little push to shift from thinking like an employee to thinking like an entrepreneur/investor. very motivational too.
DeleteWow, I didn't know about this Cashflow game although I have the Rich Dad Poor Dad book by Robert Kiyosaki. Must be a good game since it teaches one to be wise financially. I hope to play it soon and translate my learning into actual financial freedom!!

ReplyDeleteThere is Cashflow 202, so probably the old-timers are there. Don't be intimidated, in our group alone, we were all first-timers, three of which (all young ladies) came alone.
