To shed a few pounds, I thought of going to the gym. I was not looking for a long-term commitment to a gym though, so when Gold's Gym had a promo through Metrodeal, I thought, Perfect! Just what I was looking for.
Their trial membership included 10 visits, consumable within two months, and access to all their facilities and classes.
We chose their Waltermart North EDSA branch since that was the most convenient for us. On our first day, we were briefed by a personable young man named Orly Natividad. Before we began exercising, he asked us if he could discuss membership first. We got a bit worried that it would lead to us being pressured to become members. To prevent that, I took the initiative and told him "Okay, as long as you won't pressure us into signing up." He didn't. He just explained the different annual rates for their branch.
[Note: I've removed the rates I posted earlier as per Gold's Gym's request. According to the marketing manager, it's their policy not to post their rates online. If you're interested in becoming a member, please call them up instead to inquire about the prices.]

To me, the rates of Gold's Gym Waltermart North EDSA are pretty reasonable given the brand's popularity. Moreover, according to Orly, the Waltermart North EDSA branch offers the lowest rate among all their branches. The location is good too, very convenient. Waltermart is along EDSA, just a few steps away from the Munoz/Roosevelt LRT station. The gym is located inside the mall but is open early morning until late at night. According to their Web site, gym hours are as follows:
Monday-Friday 6am-12mn
Saturday 6am-9pm
Sunday 8am-9pm
Gym Equipment
In the middle of the workout area is a boxing ring. A glass case nearby contains the boxing gloves. We never saw anyone sparring inside the ring though. Most of the time it was used by people who were doing mat or ball exercises.
Treadmills and elliptical trainers are on one part of the room, near the lobby. In front of them are several large-screen TVs that play different TV shows. At the back of the treadmills and the trainers are glass walls. To maintain privacy, the middle section of these glass walls are frosted such that outsiders can only see the feet of the users as they use the equipment.
On the left side of the room are the weightlifting equipment -- dumbbells, barbells, and other weights -- as well as punching bags. This part of the gym is occupied mostly by men. There are a lot of stationary bikes and every now and then new equipment are introduced. The treadmills are pretty popular with the gym goers and are always full during early nights. Except for the treadmills, one does not have to wait long to use a particular equipment even during peak hours.
Mirrors line the walls of the gym, helping people check out their form as they work out, while a small inner room is used for classes (yoga, zumba, etc). There are a lot of equipment but moving around is not difficult. Many of the machines are intuitive to use and some have visual guides on how to use them and what muscles they target.

Locker Room
A custodian maintains the ladies' locker room so it is always clean and dry. There are several large mirrors and a hairdryer is also available. You can choose any of the lockers but you have to bring your own padlock.
There is a water fountain inside the locker room so you don't have to buy or bring your own water. Just take frequent water breaks or bring a water bottle to refill.

These shots were taken when I miraculously had the whole locker room to myself one late night:

The Crowd
The bulk of the gym users we encountered were young - in their 20s and early 30s, many of which were already slim and fit. Everyone was serious with his workout, which was quite motivating for us. I didn't see anyone just sitting and talking or just trying to be cute. Everyone was there to get results!

oh nice, i never tried yet in any gyms for one reason that my fragile body might not able to keep up the workload.hihi
ReplyDeleteI hear you. the first visit was a struggle but things got a bit easier during subsequent visits. baby steps to fitness :D
Deletewala po bang sauna room ang golds??
DeleteI love attending dance classes! From hiphop aero, to belly dancing to aero boxing. Sarap ng feeling after ng workout. =)
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear that. I get bored easily with exercises, I'll probably shift to dancing instead.
Deleteso clean!!
ReplyDeleteMore than a gym, they got very nice and clean facilities. Btw, how much is their membership fee?
ReplyDeleteit depends on the branch and the frequency. I can't post the exact figures but for the waltermart north edsa branch, it was around 1-2k per month.
DeleteI have never tried to exercise in a gym. I hope you find your experience rewarding. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried social gym before, ang mga napasok ko palang is yung mura ang fees
ReplyDeleteif there is one in your neighborhood, all the better. cheaper, more convenient, and less temptation to eat unhealthy food afterwards :D
Deletejust wondering why they don't like to publish their rates online?
ReplyDeleteNot sure, probably to avoid confusion since the branches have different rates. But I think it would help interested people make an informed decision if the rates were posted online.
Deletepretty nice! :)) I have always wanted to go to a gym but never had the chance to because of financial reasons and because I have no one to go with me . LOL.
ReplyDeleteyeah it's definitely better if you have a gym buddy. :)
Deletei've always wanted to go to the gym too pero i don't really have the determination to stay committed to it, lalo na kasi i eat so much after getting very tired. :/
ReplyDeleteSame here. *sigh* kung bakit kasi ang sarap kumain pero nakakatamad mag-exercise lol.
Deletei also notice a lot of promos for fitness classes or memberships...at least they are becoming affordable...
ReplyDeleteSo this is how Gold's Gym looks from the inside. =) It looks really clean. I haven't been inside a gym for a very long time...
ReplyDeleteI wish we had gyms like this in the provinces...walang spa facilities?
ReplyDeleteNone as far as I know. But the other branches have saunas.
Deletemas okay ba cia kesa sa fitness first?
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried FF so I can't compare. I asked bf (who once checked out FF ABS-CBN) and he said the facilities were about the same.
DeleteI have always been under the impression that Golds Gym was for the upscale crowd. Yes, it's almost intimidating :)
ReplyDeleteThe facilities look... inviting. Makes me want to get up and workout. I have yet to do that. When I do, I will give Gold's gym a try.
I agree, which was why I was surprised to find their rates reasonable. Perhaps the other branches are more upscale.
DeleteSuch a comprehensive review of Gold's Gym, it makes me feel like I'm actually there. I'm trying to gain weight but I do want to hit the gym. I hope there's a certain program for that.
ReplyDeleteI think so, since from what I know, muscles are heavier than fats, so if you develop your muscles, you'll gain weight.
DeleteGood luck to you. I am a member of FF. :-)
ReplyDeletegreat facilities! never seen one in the Phils... not a fan of gym! hehe..goodluck!
ReplyDeleteThe nearest to our place is in Alabang. My hubby and I are members since last year and yet haven't gone there for a workout even once hehehe..
ReplyDeleteYay! Sayang membership :P
DeletePwede po bang bumili ng dumbbell sa golds gym?
DeleteHi! Thanks for a very informative and visual review. I always wanted to go to the gym but still can't for several reasons such as the high rates, that I don't have a buddy to go with me (it feels intimidating kasi to be alone in a place like that), and I'm shy 'coz I know little about exercising and 'coz of my current weight. I hope I can visit them soon so that I'll know if I can handle their rates and the gym environment.
ReplyDeleteHi Elvira. Try calling up Gold's Gym to see if their rates are within your budget or if they have a trial membership promo. The very first visit is a little intimidating if you're not familiar with the equipment but once you become familiar, you won't feel intimidated even if you work out alone. The gym goers at the North Ave branch are a serious bunch, walang pakialamanan, so you won't feel self-conscious. A lot of the members there also work out alone.
DeleteThanks! I'll try to visit them one of these days so I can see it for myself. Before kasi I went to FF with a friend for a free trial and they persuade us to avail of their membership but they didn't succeed, hehe. I only visited twice and I had a great experience with the equipments naman. Medyo indimidating nga lang kasi parang ang sosyal ng mga tao dun. :p
DeleteHi! I am planning to start working out as well. And thanks for this blog. I am also intimidated and scared for the first day since there will be like an orientation. It's kinda weird na I am new to it and others there were already doing that for so long. I just wanna ask if there are a lot of gym-goers in Gold's at Waltermart North Edsa? As in madami tao?
ReplyDeleteHi Bridgette. We went there weeknights and one Saturday afternoon. There were many gym goers but there were lots of equipment so getting to use your preferred machines/tools won't be a problem. Except for the treadmill maybe. I'm only guessing, but I think weeknights have the most number of gym goers since most of the people we saw looked like office people. They probably went to Gold's Gym after work.
DeleteMy company has this promo for employees kasi that's why I wanna take advantage of it. And it's Gold's Gym and I live really near WlaterMart North Edsa, so it is veryyy convenient for me. Do you have any tips like what to bring, preparations, after workout, best time to go to gym, etc.? Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice company incentive. :D
DeleteBring a towel, padlock for the locker, mp3 player, hair tie if you have long hair, comfy gym clothes and shoes. Toiletries and extra clothes if you want to shower before leaving. If you can find a gym buddy, better.
I wish we were better prepared during our visit to Gold's LOL, but on hindsight I suggest you research online on what heart rate to target and possible routines to do to maximize the benefits of your workout. If it's feasible on your schedule, I think a workout during early mornings before going to work is neat. There will only be a few people there and the happy feeling you get after exercising can improve your mood and productivity at work.
What else? Oh, avoid the tempting restos in and around Waltermart. I'm a food loving mouse potato and my only motivation to go to Gold's was to eat at McDo afterwards. Don't follow my example! :D
Hi, thanks for this informative review! anyway, nagggym ako ngayon dyan sa gold's gym north edsa. i saw that most of the people wants to have a gym buddy before sila magpunta sa gym. You actually don't need one naman kase the staff and fitness instructors are nice and super friendly. I am actually attending alone and i love it there na nga though malayo ang byahe ko from makati. I just availed lang kase yun promo nila and i am just trying out too.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous! May promo ba ang Gold's Gym ngayon? I want to try it out sana kaya lang I'm on a tight budget kaya hindi ko mapursue ang pag-ggym.
DeleteDramachine, you're in luck, they have an ongoing promo: http://www.beeconomic.com.ph/deals/metro_manila/Gold-s-Gym-Philippines/716442398
DeleteLast 2 days to buy. Good luck!
Do you have an instructor to assist you with every workout? How was it? They said it's free for the first 3 visits. So how's it gonna be like after that? They'll just check on you from time to time nalang? I mean i don't wanna pay extra for a trainor but still be assured that i'm doing the right exercises.:)
ReplyDeleteNope. After the specified number of free personal trainer sessions, you'll have to coordinate with the PT if you want more sessions.
DeleteHi! Im interested lng sa dance class nla. Mas gnun ba na package? Haha. Tnx!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, but I think there is. When we were there, we saw people (usually girls) doing classes, but we did not see them working out with the gym equipment after their classes.
DeleteBetter inquire with Gold's Gym to be sure.
Hi. I want to enroll by january next year. Typical gym goer na din naman ako. Cn u give me a random rate for /per month or annual nila? It would help in budgeting
ReplyDeleteHi. Better inquire with Gold's Gym directly (see contact info at the end of the review). Different branches have different rates and each branch has several rates as well (depending on how often you plan to go to the gym). We were quoted annual rates.
DeleteHello, which floor is Gold's gym located in Waltermart North EDSA? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Li. It's on the 2nd floor, near the escalators.
DeleteTy! And btw, if I avail for the Metro Deal promo will they make me be a member too? Cos as of now, I prefer to just get the promo and not be a member yet.
DeleteUnless your voucher explicitly says otherwise, no you don't have to be a member. The rates were discussed with us on our first visit but we did not feel pressured to sign up for membership.
DeleteThanks a lot. Your blog's been very helpful!
DeleteReally awesome blog and more important information given here for those who wants to buy this product. I really like the blog and description of that product. So for buy online gold gym clothes more products by catagory just click here Gold Gym
ReplyDeleteis 10visits worth it already? and it's unlimited use of the facilities the whole day right? thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this!!!! Now i just need to be good about "making" the time to fit in some legitimate workouts!!!
ReplyDeletexoxo
fitness equipment.
included nba sa fee yung trainor?
ReplyDeleteWhat to espect on first day? Orientation? Weigh in?
ReplyDeleteIt isn't the same place anymore. The toilets are dirtiest of all the up scale gyms I have been to. The sauna is horrid. At least the gym equipment is decent. It is also by far the warmest (hottest) least ventilated up scale gym I have been to.
ReplyDeleteCan you give me an idea of how much is their rate for 6 months membership? Can you pm me?
Deletevery nice review about gold's gym. For buying gym wear or workout clothes you should check out online sports wear manufacturers
